Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. became the first Korean company to achieve an aggregate transformer production of 700,000 MVA on December 21 by producing an 800 MVA transformer ordered from South Africa. This amounts to about ten times the production capacity of all Korean power plants.
Since its first transformer in 1977, Hyundai Heavy has shown rapid growth by achieving 500,000 MVA in October 2008 and 600,000 MVA in January 2010. Hyundai Heavy is expected to achieve annual transformer sales of KRW 1.5 trillion (USD 1.3 billion) by the end of this year, a 40% increase from a year earlier.
Hyundai Heavy Industries has steered into the fast growth by steadily securing clients’ confidence from its key markets in North America, the Middle East, and Africa and by successfully tapping into new markets in Australia, India and Europe.
Hyundai Heavy Industries has a full line of transformers ranging from 200kV to 500kV and 800kV, setting up its global production bases in Asia, Europe and North America. The Ulsan factory located in Korea has the world’s biggest annual production capacity of 120,000 MVA. Hyundai Heavy also operates a 5,000 MVA transformer factory in Sofia, Bulgaria and a 14,000 MVA factory in Alabama, USA.
